On this day in 1984, viewers were first introduced to the iconic Clara Peller when she made her debut on a commercial for Wendy’s.
A cranky 80-year-old widow wearing curlers and a hairnet, Clara famously asked of the competition’s hamburger patty, “Where’s the beef?”
The campaign was an instant sensation and brought unprecedented success to Wendy’s.
Clara made several more appearances for Wendy’s over the course of 1985 but it wasn’t until her now-legendary catchphrase caught wind that she rose to fame.
When asked about her sudden rise in popularity, Clara humbly replied, “I don’t know what all this fuss is about — I’m just a little old lady who wants some beef!”
To this day, Clara remains one of the most recognizable faces from 70s and 80s advertising.
